Male vs Female Cavapoos

Choosing between a male and female Cavapoo often starts with a personal preference. But what differences might you actually notice once your puppy becomes part of your family? In my lines, the clearest differences are in independence, closeness, and how the puppies enjoy family activity.

Both my boys and girls are loving companions. My girls tend to show a little more independence, while my boys tend to be more focused on staying close to their people. The comparisons below come from my own experience and ongoing feedback from the many families I stay in touch with.

Are male or female Cavapoos more affectionate?

Both are loving companions. The difference I notice most is how they choose to spend time with their people.

My girls will happily join the family in the living room, but they may settle at the other end of the couch or on their dog bed first. They enjoy being part of the family while showing a little more independence.

My little boys tend to believe the best seat in the house is right beside their favorite human, or directly on their lap.

I like to put it this way: “The girls love you, but the boys are IN LOVE WITH YOU.”

A girl’s independence can appeal to someone who enjoys sharing the room without always sharing their seat. If you picture more lap time and a companion who gravitates toward you, that is where my boys tend to shine. Neither style means one loves their family more.

Male and female Cavapoos with children

When comparing boys and girls for a home with children, the difference I notice is their tolerance for excitement. In my lines, the boys tend to handle enthusiastic children and several kids playing around them especially well. My clients and I have noticed how readily they join the fun.

Being female does not rule a puppy out as a family companion. But for a busy household with plenty of children’s playtime, the boys’ tolerance and enthusiasm are qualities I would give particular weight to.

That enthusiasm still goes hand in hand with teaching children gentle handling, supervising play, and giving the puppy time to rest.

Do male Cavapoos mark inside the house?

If you have lived with a dog who marked the couch, furniture, or other unwanted places inside your home, I understand why you might hesitate to choose another male. You don’t want to repeat that experience.

I have never had a client contact me asking for help with unwanted indoor marking or leg lifting in my Cavapoo lines.

I stay in touch with many families as their puppies become adults, and this has not been a problem they bring to me. That is the experience I can share when someone worries that choosing a boy means accepting marking inside their home.

To be clear, my clients are not routinely reporting whether their dogs squat or lift a leg when going outside. What I’m describing is the absence of complaints about unwanted marking indoors.

When would I recommend a female Cavapoo?

A family may simply prefer a female, and that is a valid preference. My girls are wonderful companions too.

One personal consideration I occasionally discuss is anatomy. If a family has young daughters and would prefer not to explain why their male puppy looks different underneath, a female may feel like the more comfortable choice. With a little boy, that may simply mean an extra, age-appropriate conversation.

Otherwise, I encourage families to give my boys serious consideration, especially when closeness and family playtime are high on their wish list.

Do male and female Cavapoos cost the same?

At Conner Creek Cavapoos, male puppies are $3,200 and female puppies are $4,200, plus the $45 microchip fee and applicable sales tax. The price difference is based on sex.

The included puppy items and purchase policies are the same for both. BuddyID registration is a separate $29.95 payment when you take your puppy home and register the chip.

The $1,000 difference is worth knowing as you compare. You can find the full breakdown on my Cavapoo Price page.

Should you choose a male or female Cavapoo?

Think about the everyday companionship you enjoy. A little more independence may appeal to you, or you may love the idea of a boy who considers your lap his first choice. If closeness and joining the children’s fun are what you picture, keep the boys on your list even if you started out wanting a girl.
